New Delhi, October 24, 2024: Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre (RGCIRC), a premier institute in cancer research and treatment in India, hosted its first Workshop on NDYAG Laser Lung Metastasectomy, representing a breakthrough in the surgical treatment of metastatic lung cancer.
Members of the medical community, particularly oncology surgeons all across India, attended the event, where they observed live demonstrations of laser metastasectomy and gained hands-on experience with other advanced laser surgeries designed to enhance cancer treatment.
Cancer that begins in one part of the body and spreads to the lungs is known as lung metastasis. These are also referred to as metastatic lung tumors. In contrast, cancer that starts in the lungs is called primary lung cancer.
Laser Lung Metastasectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that utilizes laser technology to remove cancerous cells that have spread to the lungs from other parts of the body. It is technology that cuts and seals the lung, removing the tumor while preserving more of the healthy lung tissue.
While demonstrating the intricacies of laser surgery to the participants, Dr. L.M. Darlong, Head of Thoracic Oncosurgery at RGCIRC, said, “Laser metastasectomy surgery is not intended for lung cancer patients but for those with metastasis to the lungs. It is primarily used for stage 4 metastasis, when cancer has spread to the lungs, especially in cases where conventional treatments like chemotherapy and radiation have proven ineffective. While this technique is mainly utilized in European centers, particularly in Germany, RGCIRC is privileged to be the only hospital in Delhi currently offering this technology.”
Around 100 cases of lung metastasis have been treated at RGCIRC using this technology. Stating about the advantages over traditional surgeries, Dr Darlong added, “This innovative laser technology revolutionizes lung surgery by allowing us to precisely cut and seal tissue while preserving more healthy lung parenchyma compared to conventional stapler techniques. The laser technology not only enhances recovery rates but also expands treatment options for patients, making it a cheaper and more effective solution.”
RGCIRC continues to lead the way in cancer care by offering advanced treatment options that improve patient survival rates and quality of life. The workshop represents a pivotal step in raising awareness and training medical professionals in the use of advanced laser technologies for cancer treatment.
