SPARSH Hospital, Yelahanka Achieves Milestone with Successful High-Risk Bentall Surgery on 22-Year-Old Patient

Recently a major cardiovascular surgery was performed at the newly opened SPARSH Hospital at Yelahanka. Mr. Rajesh (name changed), a 22-year-old man, presented to Emergency with sudden onset of breathlessness. On evaluation, he was found to have a severe leak across the aortic valve with a huge sac like dilatation of ascending aorta.

Dr. Nutan Kumar, Consultant – Interventional Cardiology, who evaluated the patient said “The patient presented to SPARSH Hospital, Yelahanka with frank heart failure due to the valve leakage and aortic aneurysm. Most likely he suffers from a genetic condition leading to various derangements in his body”. After stabilising the patient in ICU, the CTVS Department was given the charge for performing a highly complex surgery. The patient underwent high risk BENTALL SURGERY which entails removal of degenerated aortic valve along with the diseased ascending aorta replacing them with artificial valve and graft.

The surgery was performed by a team led by Dr. Akshay Kumar Singh, Consultant – Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, who said, “This was a very challenging case, owing to the complexity of the procedure, as well as the extremely sick condition of the patient. The aneurysm was at a stage of impending rupture and his heart size was massively enlarged, either of which could have led to a catastrophe anytime. He is extremely lucky to have been diagnosed and treated at the right time”.

The recovery was remarkable. Patient underwent exemplary rehabilitation with the aid of trained nurses and physiotherapy team under the watchful eyes of Dr. Suma K. Rao, Consultant – Cardiac Anaesthetist & Intensivist, who said, “This is one of the major heart surgeries which requires meticulous planning and a multi disciplinary approach. First 48 hours in ICU are vital for patient outcome owing to haemodynamic fluctuations, possibility of infections, and bleeding”. The patient was discharged in stable condition on the 5th day of surgery.
