Indore, 25 August 2025: In a rare and inspiring case, HCG Cancer Centre, Indore successfully treated an 80-year-old woman diagnosed with kidney cancer using a minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, challenging the conventional approach of open surgery typically advised for patients in this age group.
The patient, a resident of Indore, initially experienced abdominal pain and underwent an ultrasound that revealed a suspicious right renal mass. A subsequent CT scan confirmed a 5 to 6 cm tumor in the mid-pole of the right kidney, strongly indicative of renal malignancy. Given her advanced age, she had consulted multiple hospitals where open surgery was recommended.
She was admitted to HCG Cancer Centre on 17th July, where after evaluating her fitness and motivation, Dr. Siddharth Jain, Consultant – Surgical Oncology, offered her the option of a laparoscopic right radical nephrectomy instead of open surgery.
The surgery was successfully performed on 18th July using a laparoscopic approach, and the patient was discharged on 20th July after an uneventful recovery.
“Despite her age, the patient was fit and motivated,” said Dr. Siddharth Jain. “Age is not a contraindication for laparoscopy. Minimally invasive surgery can be safely performed across age groups, depending on individual fitness and surgical evaluation. Laparoscopy is a safe and effective approach for cancer surgeries, including but not limited to gynecological, gastrointestinal, and urological malignancies. It offers benefits such as reduced postoperative pain, faster recovery, and shorter hospital stays without compromising oncological outcomes.”
The final histopathology confirmed it was Stage 2 papillary type renal cell carcinoma. The timely detection and advanced surgical approach played a key role in ensuring a positive outcome.
Commenting on the clinical milestone, Mr. Nitin Bamaniya, Chief Operating Officer, HCG Cancer Centre, Indore, said, “This case is a testament to our commitment to deliver advanced, patient-centric cancer care. We take pride in adopting modern treatment protocols that are safe, effective, and tailored to the individual, regardless of age.”
Mr. George Alex, Western India Regional Business Head at HealthCare Global Enterprises (HCG), added, “This case reaffirms HCG’s mission to provide cutting-edge oncology solutions while prioritizing patient safety and comfort. It highlights the growing capability of our regional centers like HCG Indore to handle complex cases with excellence.”
This successful case highlights HCG’s approach of combining clinical expertise with innovation to ensure best-in-class outcomes and, most importantly, hope for every patient.
