2nd September 2025: High-risk pregnancies require careful monitoring and specialized care to ensure the safety of both mother and child. A rare high-risk pregnancy case has brought new hopes to a family in Jaipur where a mother safely delivered healthy twin babies after six previous unsuccessful attempts at conception. A recent high-risk case managed by a team of doctors at Cocoon Hospital, Jaipur highlights the critical role of obstetric care, advanced monitoring, and NICU preparedness in ensuring positive outcomes in complex situations.
The expectant mother was admitted at 23-24 weeks of gestation with several complications such as cervical dilatation of 5 cm and cholestasis of pregnancy – a serious liver condition posing risk for both mother and babies. At that time the twins were only weighing 600 g and 800g with a high prediction of extreme preterm delivery. But, Dr. Pankhuri Gautam, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Cocoon Hospital, Jaipur, assisted by a multidisciplinary team of doctors and nursing staff successfully managed the treatment and delivery.
Considering the complexity of the case Dr. Pankhuri Gautam explained, “Our priority was to prolong the pregnancy to give the babies a better chance of survival, while safeguarding the mother. Through collaborative efforts of the medical team, timely interventions, and constant monitoring, we sustained the pregnancy until 32 weeks, leading to a safe delivery.”
Under strict monitoring the pregnancy was carefully sustained for nearly two months and at 32 weeks the patient went into preterm labour delivering twin babies each weighing 2 kgs.
The case also showcases the importance of specialized medical intervention in high-risk pregnancies where extending a few weeks of gestation can significantly improve neonatal survival rates. The hospital’s team adopted a vigilant step-by-step approach through advanced monitoring of maternal and fetal health, weekly ultrasounds and regular assessments, round-the-clock nursing support and NICU preparedness.
After birth, the twins were admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for specialized observation. With advanced neonatal support, both babies showed steady improvement and were eventually discharged in good health, marking a hopeful outcome for the family.
