Kolkata – The ENT Department in CMRI Hospital is working to establish a new model of ENT practice, with an emphasis on using advanced laser technology, years of surgical expertise, and a unique collaborative team approach, in what has become a unique ENT model in East India. The department is run by ENT Surgeons with incredible amounts of experience, Dr. Arjun Dasgupta, Dr. Chirajit Datta , Dr. Anupama Satpathy and Dr. N V K Mohan, who have together more than 90 years of clinical experience, who have trained and worked together over many years in the UK.
The department starts from a unique position where it relies upon both technology-led treatments, but also minimally invasive treatments. They focus on using a Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) laser system that is able to perform surgery with micro level accuracy. “Laser surgery brings not only precision, but also safety,” said Dr. Chirajit Datta.“With less trauma to surrounding tissue and quicker healing, it’s the best option for patients who value fast and effective recovery.”
Whether you are undergoing surgery for the resection of early-stage cancer, vocal cord lesions, minimally invasive sinus surgery, or delicate and precise microscopic ear surgery (including stapedotomy), the CO₂ laser system is able to perform ultra-precise surgical cuts, with minimal bleeding, rapid recovery, and excellent tissue preservation. “In ENT, even a millimetre makes a difference. The Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) laser gives us unprecedented accuracy in an area with restricted use for instruments due to proximity to delicate structures, like the vocal cords and middle ear,” said Dr. Arjun Dasgupta.
The department operates a specific Professional Voice Clinic that focuses on people that place heavy emphasis on voice use: entertainment (singers, actors), media (broadcasters, talking heads), voice professions (teachers, doctors), etc. Using digital voice analysis and video stroboscopy, we can appreciate vocal cord irregularities that would not normally be visible. The initial findings are then evaluated as a team, so that the different disciplines can create an individualised treatment plan for the individual patient. Treatment plans vary from medical therapy, voice training and minimally invasive laser surgeries.
Dr. N V K Mohan added, “What makes us different is how we blend global expertise with the best available technology, while keeping every decision team-based and patient-centric.” With this forward-thinking model, CMRI Hospital’s ENT Department is becoming a centre of excellence for laser-assisted ENT surgery in Eastern India. Their focus on technology-led precision and compassionate, collaborative care is helping patients not only recover—but thrive.
