Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru honours over 45 organ donors and their families, celebrating the gift of life

The programme brought together donors and donor families from Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta RoadFortis Hospital Cunningham Road and Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi, along with transplant specialists, healthcare professionals and members of the community. The gathering was a heartfelt recognition of individuals whose selfless contribution has given patients battling end-stage organ failure a second chance at life, while acknowledging the immense courage of families who chose organ donation during one of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Organ donation is much more than a medical procedure—it is an act of compassion that has the power to transform not just the life of a recipient, but an entire family. For recipients, a donated organ represents renewed hope, the possibility of returning to everyday life and more time with their loved ones. For donor families, the decision to donate can create a lasting legacy from an otherwise immeasurable loss.

Speaking about the importance of organ donation, Dr. Mohan Keshavamurthy, Principal Director – Renal Sciences, Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru said,
“For a patient with end-stage kidney disease, a transplant is often much more than a treatment—it is an opportunity to reclaim a normal life. Behind every successful transplant is a donor whose generosity has made that second chance possible. What makes organ donation truly remarkable is that one selfless decision can change the course of multiple lives. The donor may not know the recipient, but their gift can mean years of life for another individual and renewed hope for an entire family. Despite significant advances in transplantation, the need for donated organs continues to be substantial. Greater awareness, informed conversations within families and a willingness to pledge organs can help bridge the gap between patients waiting for a transplant and the availability of organs. We must continue to encourage people to understand the impact of their decision and come forward to support this life-saving cause.”
Dr. Mahesh Gopashetty, Additional Director – Liver Transplant, Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road said,
“liver transplant is a remarkable journey that brings together medical expertise, the resilience of a patient and, most importantly, the generosity of a donor. For someone living with advanced liver disease, receiving a donated liver can mean being given the opportunity to return to a life they feared they might lose. What makes organ donation so deeply meaningful is the legacy it creates—while a donor family may be experiencing an unimaginable loss, their decision can help another person live on and continue their own journey with their loved ones. The donors we honour today remind us that the impact of such generosity extends well beyond the transplant itself and stays with the recipient and their family for years to come.”
Dr. Ananth Rao, VP & Business Head, Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, said
“Today is fundamentally about gratitude—to the donors and their families who have chosen to give the gift of life at a time of profound personal loss. Their generosity represents the very best of human compassion and leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond their own lives. Through Organ Donation Month, Fortis seeks to encourage more people to understand the importance of organ donation and consider making an informed decision to donate. The initiative reinforces a simple yet powerful message: one selfless decision can transform and save multiple lives. By recognising and celebrating our donors and their families, we hope to inspire more people to have conversations about organ donation and consider the difference their decision could make to someone waiting for a second chance at life.”
