Diabetes mellitus (DM), is one of India's fastest-growing chronic diseases, it is commonly known to affect the heart, kidneys and cause eye problems. However, a lesser-known fact is its impact on male reproductive system and sperm health.
Deranged blood sugar levels can silently impact male hormones including testosterone, interfere with sexual function, and potentially reduce sperm quality.
Uncontrolled blood sugar causes damage to microscopic blood vessels and nerves thereby reducing the blood flow and sensations in the reproductive organs. This can result in reduced sexual desire, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction and reduced sperm quality.
Deranged blood sugars produce a double edge blow on male reproductive system by damaging the blood vessels hence reducing the penile blood flow and also leading to nerve injury that interferes with signals required to achieve an erection.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is quite common in men who are having long standing Diabetes mellitus. Studies suggest that one out of two men suffering from Diabetes mellitus can experience Erectile dysfunction in their lifetime. Apart from its physical impact, Diabetes mellitus can also affect self-confidence and relationships.
Diabetes can also affect the fertility potential of males by an impact on sperms health directly. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to oxidative stress, an imbalance between harmful free radicals and the body’s natural defences. It also can lead to sperm DNA damages, reduced sperm volume and overall poor sperm quality. As a result, men suffering from Diabetes mellitus may face various challenges during conception, and even when conception happens, the risk of developmental issues or miscarriage can be slightly higher.
The good news is that many of these effects on the male reproductive tract can be prevented or reversed with proper diabetes control and management. Focus on a balanced diet: high-fibre foods, lean proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbs. Limit: sugary drinks, processed foods, alcohol, and excess red meat. Doing regular physical activity helps with improving insulin sensitivity and naturally raises testosterone levels. Limiting the alcohol consumption, quitting smoking, limiting, and maintaining an optimum weight further improves the blood flow to the reproductive organs and sperm function.
Men living with Diabetes mellitus should do regular preventive check-ups, including hormone testing and fertility assessments when required. Doing early intervention through dietary changes, medication, and/or counselling can help restore blood flow, improve testosterone, sperm quality and enhance Men’s Health.
