Mumbai, India June 2nd, 2025: The Indian Cancer Society (ICS), India’s first non-profit organization for cancer care established in 1951, celebrated 16 glorious years of UGAM, its support group for childhood cancer survivors. Founded in 2009, UGAM was created to raise awareness about the curability of childhood cancers and to support survivors in their journey beyond recovery.
This year’s celebration was themed “Kaal Aaj Aur Kaal” — meaning “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.” The theme reflects the progress and strength of UGAM’s young warriors, who have overcome cancer and now look forward to healthier, hope-filled futures. It emphasizes their physical and emotional well-being, reintegration into society, and continued support throughout their journey.
The event welcomed over 350 guests, including cancer survivors from across India, renowned oncologists, ICS trustees, donors, and well-wishers. UGAM members opened the celebration with inspiring performances that echoed their mission to destigmatize cancer and champion survivorship. They were joined by young cancer survivors from across the country in sharing their stories and talents.
On June 2, ICS will host the 3rd National Survivorship Workshop, where insights from After Completion of Therapy (ACT) clinics run by partner hospitals will be shared. The workshop will also explore building sustainable psychological support models for survivorship and beyond.
The celebration was graced by Dr. Sudeep Gupta, Director of Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, as the Chief Guest, and Shri Sanjay Manjrekar, former Indian cricketer and broadcaster, as the Special Guest. Also in attendance were filmmaker Mr. Amole Gupte, leading oncologists, psycho-oncologists, and enthusiastic UGAM members. “An estimated 52,366 children (0-14 years) and 76,805 children and adolescents (0-19 years) develop cancer every year in India. The treatment for childhood cancer can be an overwhelming experience for parents who do not have access to the right information about the curability of childhood cancer. UGAM takes pride in supporting many families with the way forward and providing young patients with emotional support and strength in these challenging times,” said Dr. Purna A. Kurkure, Convener of Ugam.”
Dr. Vandana Dhamankar presented ICS’s ongoing survivorship initiatives, followed by a roundtable discussion moderated by Mrs. Savita Goswami, titled “Chai with UGAM.” This candid conversation created space for survivors to openly express their experiences. The UGAM Annual Newsletter was launched during the event, and members were felicitated for achievements in academics, sports, and the arts.
“Dedicated to our mission to empower young survivors, UGAM’s vision is to ensure that all childhood cancer survivors find their way to celebrate life after winning their battle with cancer and live a healthy life ahead,” Dr. Purna A. Kurkure added.
