Thiruvananthapuram- July 24: Doctors at KIMSHEALTH successfully treated a 73-year-old  from Kollam with complete blockage of the aorta, using the novel CERAB procedure. The patient came to the OP, with complaints of pain and swelling in both legs. A  CT  angiogram evaluation,  revealed complete occlusion of the abdominal aorta and both common iliac arteries-  the arteries supplying blood to both legs. This blockage had severely reduced blood flow to the lower limbs, causing  symptoms in the patient.

The medical team led by Dr. Manish Kumar Yadav, Senior Consultant, Neurointerventional Radiology, KIMSHEALTH, recommended Covered Endovascular Reconstruction of the Aortic Bifurcation (CERAB), a  minimally invasive procedure that is used to treat complex blockages of the abdominal aorta and leg arteries.

During the procedure, catheters were navigated through the blood vessels and  covered expandable  stents were   used to re-construct  the natural branching of the aorta to  restore blood flow to the legs. "CERAB is an effective treatment for patients with complex blockages of the abdominal aorta and leg arteries. Large incisions  can be avoided, thus  making it a safer option for many patients, especially the elderly", said Dr.Yadav

Post procedure,  the blood flow to both legs improved  and  the patient experienced relief from pain, and  swelling. Dr.Santhosh Joseph, Senior Consultant, Neuro Interventional Radiology and Dr. Parvathy P, Consultant, Anesthesia, were also part of the three hour long procedure. The patient was discharged after three  days of hospital stay, and has now resumed his normal routine.
