Kochi, 04th November, 2025: Lakshadweep woman who was undergoing treatment at Aster Medcity for a new form of amoebic meningoencephalitis is now out of danger, doctors confirmed today. The infection was identified as Granulomatous Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (GAM), making this the region's first reported case caused by the new variant, Acanthamoeba which differs from the more commonly seen Naegleria species.
The patient, who works in Edapally, had been admitted three weeks ago with severe headache, vomiting, and eye movement disorder. Following an MRI scan, a pus formation was detected on the left side of her brain. Initial tests for meningitis were inconclusive, but a subsequent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis confirmed infection caused by Acanthamoeba variant.
Upon confirmation, treatment was initiated immediately. The patient has shown significant improvement and is currently stable under close observation at Aster Medcity.
“This subtype, Acanthamoeba is less dangerous compared to the commonly reported Naegleria. However, early diagnosis and prompt intervention are necessary," said Dr. Sandeep Padmanabhan, Senior Consultant Neurology & Epilepsy Management, Aster Medcity, Kochi, who treated the patient. "We continue to monitor her condition and will maintain follow-up care to ensure full neurological recovery," he added. Dr. Anup R Warrier, Senior Consultant and Dr. Krishna Prabha P, Associate Consultant from - Infectious Diseases department at Aster Medcity were also part of the team.
