National, 5 May 2025: Fernandez Hospital marked International Day of the Midwife (IDM) 2025 with a spirited three-day celebration across its hospitals from 3–5 May, blending powerful storytelling, interactive games, and community engagement to honour the role of midwives as “Critical in a Crisis”—the global theme set by the International Confederation of Midwives.
Spanning the Bogulkunta, Banjara Hills (Stork Home), and Hyderguda in-patient facilities, the series of events welcomed expecting families and the community into the heart of midwifery-led care, which is rooted in respectful, evidence-based practices. Through a series of immersive activities, the Foundation showcased how midwives form the backbone of safe, respectful, and empowering maternity care, especially in resource-limited settings.
“In a world where safe and gentle births are still a privilege, midwives are often the only constant in a mother’s journey. This IDM, we wanted to honour their courage, skill, and midwifery philosophy of care which deserves a healthcare system that recognises its worth. At Fernandez, we’ve embraced this model since 2011 witnessed the impact in every woman who returns asking for her midwife,” said Dr Evita Fernandez, Chairperson and Managing Director, Fernandez Foundation.
“Midwives often step in when systems fall short—quietly navigating crises with skill and compassion,” said Inderjeet Kaur, Director of Midwifery Services, at Fernandez Hospital. “Through these activities, we wanted to make their critical role visible, while showing how joyful and informed care can truly be.”
Highlights of IDM 2025 at Fernandez Hospital:
- The Midwife’s Touch: As part of the celebrations, audiences got to watch ‘The Midwife’s Touch’, a live roleplay that walked viewers through the emotional challenges midwives help mothers navigate from pregnancy to childbirth.
- Wheel of Birth: The interactive activity Wheel of Birth got parents to test their knowledge and learn more about newborn care and breastfeeding through fun, midwifery-themed games.
- Open House: On 5 May, visitors to our Hyderguda in-patient facility toured the newly launched Midwifery Outpatient Clinic, saw demonstrations of water birthing setups, and interacted with midwives trained in natural and low-intervention births. The open house was an invitation for the community to witness firsthand how respectful maternity care can be both safe and empowering.
