Kochi, July 08: Apollo Adlux Hospital, Angamaly, has achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully removing a posterior mediastinal tumor, a tumor located deep inside the chest cavity close to the spine using advanced robotic surgery. The complex procedure was performed on 41-year-old Dr Priya Devi, a medical professional, with the tumour being completely removed through robotic thoracic surgery.
Posterior mediastinal tumours, which are traditionally treated through a complex open-chest surgery known as a posterolateral thoracotomy, requires a large incision measuring approximately 12 to 15 centimetres along the back of the chest to access and remove the tumour. In this case, however, the surgical team of Apollo Adlux Hospital, led by Dr. Rinett Sebastian, successfully removed the tumour entirely through an advanced, minimally invasive robotic procedure using small keyhole incisions.
“Compared to conventional open surgery, robotic surgery offers significantly faster recovery, with most patients not requiring an ICU stay and being able to return to their normal lives much sooner,” said Dr. Rinett Sebastian. The patient recovered well and was discharged from the hospital within just four days of the surgery.
The multidisciplinary team consisted of Dr. Rinett Sebastian, Senior Consultant, Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery; Dr. Shaji K. Ayillath, Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncology & Robotics; Dr. Suchith Cheruvally, Senior Consultant, Cardiac Anaesthesia and Dr. Done Jose, Consultant, Minimal Access Surgery.
