Introduction

On the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday (September 17), the Government of India launched a powerful health initiative titled “Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan” (Healthy Women, Empowered Families). This 16-day nationwide campaign, running from September 17 to October 2, 2025, places a sharp focus on women’s health, nutrition, adolescent care, and community empowerment.

Launched across all states and Union Territories, the campaign aims to reach the last mile of society, ensuring that every mother, woman, and adolescent girl has access to basic health awareness, screenings, and wellness services.

The state-level launch event in Odisha was held at IDCO Exhibition Ground in Bhubaneswar, graced by Governor of Odisha, Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi, and other dignitaries. The event marks a significant step towards realizing the Prime Minister’s vision of holistic, inclusive, and preventive healthcare.

 Why This Campaign Matters

The campaign recognizes the vital role women play in building healthy families and strong communities. In India, especially in rural and underserved areas, women often face barriers to healthcare — from lack of access to awareness and affordability.

The “Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar” campaign bridges that gap by focusing on:

  • Preventive healthcare for women and adolescent girls
  • Maternal and child health support
  • Nutrition awareness and anaemia prevention
  • Screenings for breast, cervical, and oral cancers
  • Promotion of menstrual hygiene and mental wellness
  • Health services in schools, villages, and slums

Scope of the Campaign

This initiative is being implemented through a convergent approach, involving central and state government departments, healthcare institutions, community health workers, NGOs, and educational institutions. The scope is broad, touching upon:

  • Urban slums, rural villages, schools, and health centres
  • Hospitals and OPD units offering special services to women
  • Awareness sessions in local languages on nutrition, hygiene, and early detection
  • Health camps reaching marginalized and tribal areas

AIIMS Bhubaneswar and other leading medical institutions are actively involved in rolling out daily services including NCD screenings, anaemia testing, sickle cell disease diagnosis, and more — with a special Kutir (help desk) set up at AIIMS to register and assist women and caregivers.

Importance of “Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar”

  • Empowering Women, Uplifting Families: When women are healthy, the entire family benefits — physically, emotionally, and economically.
  • Focus on Adolescents: Early intervention for adolescent girls ensures long-term reproductive and mental health outcomes.
  • Rural Reach: The campaign brings healthcare services directly to doorsteps in rural and tribal areas.
  • Disease Prevention: Early screenings for cancer and NCDs drastically improve treatment outcomes and reduce mortality.
  • Health Literacy: Promotes understanding of hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention at the grassroots level.

 Government Commitment to Women’s Empowerment

The campaign is a continuation of the government’s unwavering focus on education, health, financial inclusion, and empowerment of women. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership has seen several key initiatives such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Ujjwala Yojana, Jan Dhan accounts for women, and the National Nutrition Mission — all of which are aligned with the goals of this campaign.

“With this campaign, we aim not just to provide healthcare but to empower every woman with knowledge, support, and dignity,” said Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

 The Way Forward

The “Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan” sets a benchmark for public health outreach by combining medical services with social awareness and empowerment. As the campaign continues until Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, it is expected to benefit millions of women and adolescent girls across India, creating a healthier and more resilient nation.

It’s not just a campaign — it’s a movement towards a future where every woman has access to health, dignity, and opportunity.
