The theme of this year’s Ovarian Cancer Day is “No Women Left Behind” It can be done by raising awareness, advocating for access to screening and treatment, and supporting ongoing research efforts, we can empower women to take charge of their health and overcome the challenges posed by this devastating disease.

Ovarian cancer is often referred to as the “silent killer” because its symptoms can be subtle or easily mistaken for other less serious conditions. This lack of early detection methods and the silent progression of the disease makes ovarian cancer one of the most lethal gynaecological cancers. But, by understanding the various risk factors associated with ovarian cancer, we can take proactive steps towards prevention.

Age: Age is one of the primary risk factors for ovarian cancer. As women age, the risk of developing ovarian cancer increases, highlighting the importance of regular health check-ups and screenings, especially as women enter their 30s.

Genetics: Inherited mutations in genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 can significantly increase the risk of ovarian cancer. Genetic testing, regular screenings, and considering preventive surgeries can help manage this risk effectively.

Previous Link: Previous diagnoses of breast, colorectal, or uterine cancer may also increase the risk of ovarian cancer. Therefore, women with such medical histories need to be vigilant and proactive in monitoring their health.

Smoking: Smoking also triggers the risk of having Ovarian cancer so make sure to avoid direct and indirect smoking.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise and a balanced diet can help reduce this risk and promote overall well-being.

SYMPTOMS
Paying attention to symptoms such as abnormal bleeding, extreme fatigue, unexplained weight loss, and other warning signs can aid in early detection and timely intervention.

Let’s stand together, united in our determination to combat ovarian cancer and strive towards a future where every woman has the opportunity to live a healthy and fulfilling life.
