The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) has said India will face heatwave conditions between April and June. Many states of central India and south India have faced the temperature of 40 degrees or above. IMD said to people who avoid going outside as much they can if it’s much needed to use a wet cloth, an umbrella, cotton clothes, and a cap to save themselves from this harmful heatwave. Due to the constant heat, it is important to be prepared and trained to survive the hot summer months. The heat may cause some risk to your health, but with some simple precautions and smart choices, you can beat the heat and make the most of the season. Here are some dos and don’ts to keep yourself cool, hydrated and safe in the summer heat:

Dos in the summer

Stay safe: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you are not thirsty. There is a risk of dehydration in the heat, so keep a bottle of water handy and drink it regularly.

Clothes: Choose loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing that will help reflect the sun and keep your body cool. Breathable fabrics like cotton are good for hot weather.

Seek shade: When you are outdoors, seek shade outside to avoid direct sunlight. Use a hat, umbrella or shelter under trees or glass to reduce the risk of heat and overheating.

Limit Outdoor Activity: Try to plan to play outdoors during cooler times of the day, such as in the morning or evening. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the room and avoid exercising during the hottest hours.

Wear sunscreen: Apply a high SPF before going out, even on cloudy days. To protect your skin from harmful UV rays, re-apply sunscreen every few hours, especially when sweating or swimming.

Keep your home cool: Use fans, air conditioners or other cooling devices to maintain the temperature in your home. Close curtains or blinds during the hottest hours of the day to block sunlight and reduce heat.

Look at the pets and children Groups: Keep an eye on children, elderly family members and pets during hot weather. Make sure they stay hydrated, stay cool, and avoid prolonged sun exposure.

Don’ts in summer

Do not overwork yourself: Do not work hard or exercise in the heat, as this will cause heart attack and exhaustion. Listen to your body and rest when necessary.

Do not leave children or pets in a hot car: Even a few minutes in a parked car when the weather is hot can be dangerous. Do not leave children, pets or others in a parked car, even if the windows are open.

Don’t forget to eat: Maintain a healthy diet and eat simple, easy-to-digest foods in hot weather. Eat plenty of water-rich fruits and vegetables to stay hydrated and nourished.

Don’t neglect hygiene: Shower or bathe regularly to stay cool and recover. Consider taking a cold shower or using a wet towel to lower your body temperature.

Don’t ignore the warning signs: Watch for emergency symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headache, rapid heartbeat or excessive sweating. If you have these symptoms, immediately seek the roof or any kind of shade, rest well and drink sufficient water.
