A balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle are the two pillars of a strong body and mind. Our everyday habits and nutritional choices not only impact our own health but also influence the generations to come. Recognizing the vital role that nutrition plays in building a healthy society, "Poshan Maah" (Nutrition Month) has emerged as a powerful nationwide movement aimed at spreading awareness and action on maternal and child nutrition.
Poshan Maah is observed every year in September as part of the "Poshan Abhiyaan" (National Nutrition Mission), launched by the Government of India in March 2018. The goal is to bring all stakeholders together to ensure holistic nourishment for children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers, particularly at the grassroots level.
Now in its 8th edition, the State-level celebration of the National Poshan Maah has taken center stage in Odisha, highlighting the importance of nutrition as the cornerstone of a healthy and self-reliant future.

Malnutrition, especially among women and children, continues to be one of the biggest public health challenges in India. Poor nutrition can lead to:
Stunted growth in children
Low birth weight
Compromised immunity
Developmental delays
Increased maternal and infant mortality
Addressing these challenges requires not just healthcare but community awareness, education, and consistent behavioural change. Poshan Maah seeks to make nutrition a people’s movement — or as we say, Jan Andolan.
Under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi, Odisha has transformed Poshan Maah 2025 into a vibrant, state-wide campaign. This year, the month-long celebration has become a true Jan Andolan — a mass movement involving various departments, communities, frontline workers, and citizens.
Over 54,81,952 theme-based awareness activities have been conducted across the state — from cities to remote villages — spreading critical messages on nutrition, health, and early childhood care.
Maternal and Child Care during Early Childhood
Promoting breastfeeding, immunization, and regular health check-ups
Focus on first 1000 days (from conception to age 2) — the most critical window for a child’s growth
Nutrition Education through 'Padhai Bhi, Poshan Bhi'
Integrating nutrition education in schools and Anganwadis
Involving teachers, parents, and children in healthy eating habits
Involving Fathers in Nutrition
Encouraging active male participation in child and maternal nutrition
Promoting shared responsibility in the household
Local & Indigenous Food for Self-Reliance
Supporting the “Swadeshi ke liye Swara” movement
Promoting millets, local greens, and traditional foods through kitchen gardens and local food festivals
Digital Interventions and Real-Time Monitoring
Use of technology and mobile apps to track nutritional data
Strengthening the role of Anganwadi workers through digital tools
Empowerment at the Grassroots
Training and capacity-building of ASHA, ANM, and Anganwadi workers
Encouraging SHGs (Self-Help Groups) to contribute to nutrition initiatives
The success of Poshan Maah is driven by multiple flagship schemes, including:
POSHAN Abhiyaan
India’s flagship program for improving nutritional outcomes for children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers
Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS)
Provides supplementary nutrition, preschool education, and health check-ups through Anganwadi centers
Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY)
Cash benefits for pregnant and lactating women to ensure rest and good nutrition
Mid-Day Meal Scheme / PM-POSHAN
Ensures hot cooked meals for school children to improve their nutritional status and encourage school attendance
Anaemia Mukt Bharat
Aims to reduce anaemia through iron-folic acid supplementation, deworming, and behaviour change
Saksham Anganwadi and Mission Poshan 2.0
Strengthening nutrition delivery and early childhood development through infrastructure and digital reform
Nutrition is not a luxury — it is a right. Events like Poshan Maah remind us that building a healthy, strong, and educated society starts at the grassroots. When women and children are well-nourished, the entire community flourishes.
The collective efforts made during Poshan Maah 2025, especially in Odisha, are laying the foundation for a healthier and brighter future. But the journey doesn’t end here. Awareness must turn into daily practice — in our homes, schools, and communities.
