Mumbai- Doctors from apex Hospitals have managed to save the life of a 53-year-old man from Mumbai who suffered from a rare brain disease, brain aneurysm. Madhav Khanwilkar (name changed), a resident of Goregaon, suddenly fainted at midnight. His relatives admitted him to Apex Hospital at Akurli Road, Kandivali under the guidance of neurosurgeon Dr. Samir Parekh. A brain aneurysm, also known as a cerebral aneurysm, is a type of cerebrovascular disease caused by an area of weakness on a blood vessel. It occurs when the wall of a blood vessel in your brain becomes weak and bulges. The pressure inside the blood vessel causes that weak area to balloon out. If the weakened area ruptures, it can cause a hemorrhagic stroke that can lead to brain damage or even death.
Dr. Samir Parekh, neurosurgeon from Apex Hospitals, Kandivali explains, “The patient was suffering from cerebral aneurysm (also known as brain aneurysm). The patient came in a semi unconscious state with bleeding inside the brain and on the surface of the brain with water collection in the brain. To know the cause of bleeding, DSA- Brain angiography was done which was negative. To save patients’ lives, Tube was put inside the brain to remove excess water and bleeding. Patient improved and after a few days’ tube was removed. V P shunt (This device drains cerebrospinal fluid from the brain to the abdominal cavity with a thin silicone tube. A valve is used to control the amount of fluid drained). The abdominal portion of the catheter is placed laparoscopically, ensuring correct placement of the catheter and minimizing the risk of abdominal organ injury, was done to divert brain water to the abdomen so it can drain it permanently. Patient was discharged and he is asked to repeat DSA after 6 weeks.”
A cerebral aneurysm weakens and swells the nerves in the brain. Citizens above 50 to 55 years of age as well as those suffering from hereditary brain diseases and people who are under stress have to face this disease.
