World Parkinson’s Day is celebrated every year on April 11 to honor the life of Dr. James Parkinson, who discovered the neurodegenerative disorder in 1817, and to raise awareness about Parkinson’s disease. The day is dedicated to promoting research into new treatments and a cure for the condition.

Dr. Atampreet Singh Director, Department of Neurology at Fortis Hospital Greater Noida has shared valuable insights on Parkinson’s disease, a prevalent neurodegenerative condition that primarily affects individuals aged 50 years and above. Parkinson’s disease can be caused by a decline in dopamine production in the brain or by damage to brain cells due to underlying health problems or injuries.

Symptoms commonly associated with Parkinson’s include tremors, muscle stiffness, slowed movement, and balance and coordination difficulties, which can increase the risk of falls. Although there is no cure for Parkinson’s, Dr. Singh emphasizes the importance of symptom management. Treatment modalities include medications to control dopamine levels, physiotherapy to improve mobility, and, in select cases, surgical interventions such as deep brain stimulation (DBS).

“Early diagnosis and a proactive treatment plan are crucial for managing Parkinson’s disease effectively,” states Dr. Praween Kumar, CEO of Fortis Hospital Greater Noida. “By combining medical interventions with positive lifestyle changes, individuals with Parkinson’s can lead fulfilling and active lives.”
