HCG NCHRI Cancer Centre organizes Free Cancer Screening camp for Transgender Community to create cancer awareness

Nagpur, November 2022:- In continuation of its endeavour to ensure world-class cancer care services and commitment towards cancer free society, HCG NCHRI Cancer centre Nagpur launched a unique campaign towards Transgender and other LGBT community by organising a one-day free cancer screening camp at the hospital campus, where more than 75 persons from the transgender community availed cancer screening services free of cost. The Free cancer screening package included Mammography, USG abdomen, PAP SMEAR (when and where required), necessary blood investigations & consultations by HCG`s expert team like cancer physician, Physiotherapist, Yoga therapist and Psycho-oncologist.

This program was organised by HCG Cancer centre Nagpur in association with Sarathi Trust. Sarathi trust is Vidarbha’s first Community based organization that has been working for the LGBTQI+ Community for their Health, human rights and legal rights in Nagpur for past 18 years.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Venkateshwarlu Marapaka- COO, HCG NCHRI Cancer centre Nagpur said, “Our aim is to create cancer awareness among the public. it is our mission to reach out to each and every individual from the transgender community and to provide them with free cancer screening in the coming days. I would like to thank Sarathi Trust for coming forward and joining hands with HCG in this noble cause”.

Dr Sushant Ikhar, Consultant Medical oncology, HCG NCHRI Cancer centre Nagpur said, “Two separate studies by experts in US reports the prevalence of cancer to be around 56% and 42% among transwomen in India and Thailand, respectively, being a responsible healthcare provider, we would like to come forward and extend our help to the less privileged part of our society. This initiative will help us in establishing a healthy and cancer-free India”.

The program was coordinated by Mr. Nikunj Joshi from Sarathi Trust, Dr Kamaljeet Kaur and Supporting staff of HCG cancer centre.
