Global experts share insights on female pattern hair loss treatments at HairTalks

Mumbai, October 8, 2024: Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is an escalating concern for women around the world. A study by QR678® involving 150,000 women found that 28% of those diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) discovered the condition only after seeking treatment for hair thinning. In light of this growing concern, global experts came together in the second episode of HairTalks™—a series of webinars hosted by Global Cosmetic Surgery and supported by QR678®—to discuss the multifactorial nature of FPHL, including its diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment approaches.

The distinguished panel of experts included Dr Aparna Santhanam, Consultant Dermatologist, PD Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre, Mahim, Maharashtra and Head, Medical Operations, Kaya Limited; Dr Ganeshram A/L Sivaram, Aesthetic Physician, Neumax Clinic; Dr Mohan Shenoy, Assistant Professor, Department of Endocrinology, Sree Gokulam Medical College, Venjarumoodu, Kerala; and Dr Sarah Alenezi, Dermatologist and Hair Disease Clinical Fellow at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, Florida, United States.

Also part of the panel were Dr Rajat Kandhari, Consultant Dermatologist, Dermatosurgeon, and Specialist in Aesthetic Procedures, Dr Kandhari’s Skin & Dental Clinic in Delhi; and Dr Parul Saoji, Cosmetic Gynecologist, Laparoscopic Surgeon, and Infertility Specialist at Oracle Clinic, Nagpur, Maharashtra.

The experts came together to explore the evolving landscape of Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL), emphasizing the need for comprehensive treatment strategies, early intervention, and patient education.

Dr Glynis Ablon, Associate Clinical Professor U.C.L.A. Ablon Skin Institute and Research Center. Manhattan Beach, California provided a detailed overview of the causes of FPHL, highlighting hormonal imbalances, genetic predispositions, and lifestyle factors as key contributors. She emphasized that FPHL is often misunderstood and called for a holistic approach to treatment. “Hair loss in women is often underdiagnosed. While genetics play a role, factors like nutrition, stress, and hormone levels are crucial considerations,” said Dr Ablon. Advanced therapies, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and QR678-Neo®, were discussed as part of comprehensive treatment protocols that aim to enhance hair follicle health.

Dr Pranjal Mhatre, Assistant Manager, QR678® elaborated on the impact of hormonal imbalances, particularly PCOS, on hair health. “Female pattern alopecia is often associated with increased DHT levels. QR678 Neo® counteracts the effects of hormonal disruption in the scalp, promoting hair follicle rejuvenation without hormonal interference, making it safer and more effective for women,” Dr Mhatre explained.

Dr Rajat Kandhari, Consultant Dermatologist, Dermatosurgeon and Specialist in Aesthetic Procedures, Dr Kandhari’s Skin & Dental Clinic, Delhi and Dr Ganeshram A/L Sivaram, Aesthetic Physician at Neumax Clinic, emphasized that a combination of treatments, including lifestyle modifications, PRP, and QR678®, provides more effective results than standalone treatments. “Addressing underlying causes like hormonal imbalances and stress is key to long-term management,” said Dr Kandhari.

Dr Mohan Shenoy, Assistant Professor, Department of Endocrinology, Sree Gokulam Medical College, Venjarumoodu, Kerala and Dr Parul Saoji, Cosmetic Gynecologist, Laparoscopic Surgeon, Infertility Specialist, Oracle Clinic, Nagpur, Maharashtra discussed the critical role hormones play in hair loss, particularly during menopause and perimenopause. They stressed the importance of nutrition and a multidisciplinary approach in managing FPHL effectively. “Hormonal fluctuations significantly impact hair health, and a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach is essential,” noted Dr Shenoy.

The session concluded with a consensus on the importance of early diagnosis, personalized treatment plans, and continuous innovation to improve patient outcomes. Dr Ablon underscored the evolving landscape of hair loss treatments, stating, “With advancements in therapies like QR678® and a multidisciplinary approach, we are better equipped to help patients suffering from female pattern alopecia.”
